I Walked with a Zombie
Nurse Betsy Connell takes on the job of looking after the wife of plantation owner Paul Holland on the island of San Sebastian in the West Indies. Jessica Holland lies bed-ridden, struck down by a raging fever that has left her physically weak and in a state of partial consciousness. What is the origin of her malaise? Voodoo witchcraft? Some complex family history? Jacques Tourneur preferred I Walked with a Zombie to Cat People and frequently cited it as one of his best films. Of all his films, I Walked with a Zombie goes farthest in the direction of pure cinematic poetry and the use of sounds and images purely for their “power of suggestion”.
